According to research conducted at the University of Vermont and recently published in the journal *Science*, crop losses for food grains will increase substantially as the climate warms, since rising temperatures accelerate the metabolism and population growth of insect pests.

“Climate change will have a negative impact on crops, and we will see a greater presence of pests,” said Scott Merrill of the University of Vermont, a co-author of the study. The research team analyzed how insect pests attacking three staple crops—rice, maize, and wheat—would respond under a variety of climate scenarios.

They found that rising global temperatures would lead to increased crop losses, particularly in temperate regions.

Losses are projected to range between 10% and 25% per degree of warming. According to the researchers, a mere 2-degree rise in average global temperature will result in total crop losses of approximately 213 million tons across the three grains.
